Travel procurement
The hidden cost of an incomplete corporate travel search
The best contract means little if relevant options are missing when employees book.

A trip can look inexpensive on paper and cost more at booking. The blind spot is not just the service fee: it is the fares that were never compared and the hotels that did not appear. Procurement should ask not only which agency charges less, but which search returns comparable, policy-eligible choices.
What the research actually shows
A study by Loupit reported between August 1 and September 30, 2026, covering 153 companies, found that the agency with the lowest fee did not offer the lowest final price in 39% of the quotations analyzed. The publication also reports price differences of 32% between the agencies compared. These are sample findings, not a forecast of savings for every company.
Search quality is just as important: in 83% of searches, agencies returned the same inventory and results but at different prices. In 17%, at least one flight or hotel appeared in only one agency. Of these exclusive options, 68% were hotels in cities with fewer than 100,000 residents. The study does not establish why availability differed.
A new angle: missing options have an opportunity cost
When a travel tech platform shows only part of the available selection, a manager cannot tell whether a more suitable eligible offer might have been available elsewhere. This is an opportunity cost, not an expense proven by the study. It should be measured trip by trip, using equivalent live offers and company policy.
In secondary destinations, a low displayed fare can conceal inadequate hotel coverage. One agency returning no results does not mean there are no hotels in town. For companies with distributed sites, content coverage belongs on the corporate travel agency scorecard.
A procurement scorecard beyond the service fee
- Record the eligible total cost for each search: fare, taxes, fee and other applicable charges before booking.
- Compare like-for-like terms: flight times, baggage, changes, room type, cancellations and payment.
- Track relevant results by agency and destination, including smaller cities.
- Flag exclusive offers and price differences for the same itinerary; reconfirm availability before ticketing.
- Measure out-of-policy approvals, booking lead time and later change costs without attributing every variation to the agency.
From quotation to auditable decision
In the TRAVEL MANAGER.AI corporate travel marketplace companies can compare offers from Travel Manager and other agencies they select, while keeping policy, approvals and expenses in a single travel management platform. Simultaneous comparison helps find the best eligible choice among offers actually searched; it cannot guarantee the lowest price across the entire market.
The All-in-One Corporate Travel Superapp connects booking, human support and travel and expense. AI can summarize fare and term differences, but final decisions still depend on availability, supplier rules and company policy. This is the evolution of the corporate travel agency: better decision context, not merely a longer price list.
